The Challenge

How do you help stabilize the browsing experience for those with hand tremors?

To help alleviate the challenges of tremors for over 50 million patients affected by Parkinson’s and other conditions, we focused on one of the most enabling daily activities: browsing the web. That’s why we created Staybl, the first anti-tremor browser, available for free. It compensates for tremor movement in real-time, so even if your device shakes, your browser window stays stable.

The Outcome

From frustration to frictionless

Tremors make it significantly more difficult to operate a smart device and connect to an increasingly digital world, but Staybl helped users overcome that, making daily life easier for several patients. Staybl’s entire experience and design system was optimized in close cooperation with Parkinson’s and tremor patients, and tested along all stages of the process. This pro-bono initiative help those with tremors more easily connect to loved, enjoy entertainment online, and browse with more ease.

The entire app is designed around the needs to people with tremor. As a result, we based its branding on the Archimedes Spiral Test, which is used to classify the tremor of Parkinson's patients. The different manifestations of this test allowed us to derive a vivid logo system that expresses different levels of tremor.

Staybl uses Atkinson Hyperlegible sans-serif font developed by the Braille Institute for improved legibility.

How we did it

Innovating with empathy

Staybl works by shrinking the browser window, creating a buffer zone around the edge of the screen, and uses the native accelerometer to detect shaking movement. When any tremor movement is detected, the app shifts the browser window in the opposite direction in real-time, thereby stabilizing the webpage. As many Parkinson’s patients also suffer from impaired vision, we incorporated large interaction areas, bold colors, and paid careful attention to shapes and contrasts.
